Coinbase Pro Returns With a Broader Trading Lineup
Active traders are expected to gain a rebuilt Coinbase Pro platform spanning crypto and equities at year-end, Coinbase (Nasdaq: COIN) announced Oct. 7. The company outlined Coinbase Pro’s planned return as part of its Everything Exchange strategy, which combines financial instruments in one service. Equities are stocks, while spot transactions involve buying and selling assets directly.
The rebuilt venue targets high-volume users executing complex strategies. Coinbase stated:
“At the end of this year, Coinbase Pro will return as the dedicated professional platform within the Everything Exchange.”
Planned improvements include faster order routing, revised execution flows, and advanced trading tools.
The return follows Coinbase’s earlier replacement of Pro with Coinbase Advanced, its service for experienced users, with customer migration completed in November 2023. The unified account strategy covers several asset classes, including futures. Standard futures commit participants to transactions at specified prices and future dates.
That broader offering follows Coinbase’s U.S. stock trading rollout in February. Eligible users gained access to stocks and exchange-traded funds alongside cryptocurrency holdings. These funds hold baskets of investments and trade on exchanges.
Deribit Integration Sets up Wider Options Access
Coinbase’s completed Deribit integration creates Coinbase Global Exchange ahead of a planned connection between U.S. and international liquidity. Deribit, a crypto derivatives exchange, announced its acquisition agreement in May 2025. The international perpetuals migration finished Oct. 1. Coinbase cites over $30 billion in bitcoin options open interest, or outstanding contracts, as of Sept. 30, and more than $1 trillion in volume last year.
The expansion supports hedging, or reducing exposure to price swings, and speculation. Crypto derivatives derive their value from underlying assets. An option gives its buyer the right, without an obligation, to buy or sell at a specified price by an expiration date. Perpetual futures have no expiration date.
U.S. institutional access will run through Coinbase Financial Markets, a registered futures commission merchant that handles these contracts. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) staff issued conditional derivatives guidance on May 29. Staff classified specified perpetual contracts as foreign futures and provided conditional relief for posting customer crypto assets as margin with an affiliated foreign broker. Margin secures leveraged positions against potential losses.
Coinbase Prime, the company’s institutional service, has opened onboarding ahead of options availability in the coming weeks. The app rollout for eligible individuals outside the U.S. is scheduled to start in late October. U.S. retail access is planned for later this year, subject to eligibility. Prime also combines custody, financing, staking, and other services.
Spot Margin to Offer up to 10x Leverage With US Restrictions
The new portfolio structure will assess offsetting positions together, potentially reducing the collateral required to maintain open trades. Collateral means assets pledged to secure obligations. The structure builds on Coinbase’s liquidity integration effort discussed in June. A strategy builder supports executing several components of a transaction in one step, with diagrams showing potential profits and breakeven levels.
Eligible spot-margin users will be able to borrow against collateral, with leverage reaching 10 times on selected major assets and five times on other supported assets. More than 15 assets will be accepted as security, with borrowing and price-linked positions sharing one margin portfolio. Borrowing magnifies gains and losses, which may exceed the initial deposit. Pledged holdings can be liquidated without notice.
U.S. spot-margin access will be restricted to Eligible Contract Participants, a legal category generally covering institutions and financially qualified participants. The service is offered through Coinbase affiliates rather than Coinbase Financial Markets. The upgraded engine that matches buy and sell orders and streamlined retail onboarding are already live. Revised Advanced fee tiers begin at $10,000 in qualifying volume, combining spot and contract activity toward lower commissions.
